This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of journalism in the context of print media. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, students will learn about the principles of journalism, news writing, reporting, editing, and the role of print media in society. The course will also cover the basics of digital journalism and the use of social media in journalism.

Week 3-4: News Writing and Reporting

The basics of news writing: The inverted pyramid, the 5 W’s and H.
The art of headline writing.
The basics of reporting: Interviewing techniques, fact-checking, and verification.
The structure of a news story.


Week 5-6: Editing and Proofreading

The basics of editing: Copy editing, line editing, and structural editing.
The role of the editor in the newsroom.
The basics of proofreading: Grammar, punctuation, and style.


Week 7-8: Print Media and Society

The role of print media in society: Informing, educating, and entertaining.
The impact of print media on society.
The challenges facing print media in the digital age.


Week 9-10: Digital Journalism and Social Media

Introduction to digital journalism: The basics of online news writing and reporting.
The use of social media in journalism: Best practices and ethical considerations.
The future of print media in the digital age.

Course Schedule:

The course will be conducted online, with weekly lectures and assignments.
Lectures will be pre-recorded and made available to students on a weekly basis.
Weekly quizzes and assignments will be due on Sundays.
The final project will be due at the end of the 12-week course.
