Shehbaz Sharif, re-elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan, faces three main obstacles in the coalition government
Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second time. Here are three primary obstacles facing the coalition government.
Shehbaz Sharif is set to take the oath as Prime Minister of Pakistan on Monday, marking his second term in office since 2022. Pakistan is currently facing daunting economic and security challenges. President Arif Alvi will oversee the swearing-in ceremony for Shehbaz Sharif at the President’s residence in the afternoon.
The former politician, aged 72, previously held the position of prime minister in a coalition government between April 2022 and August 2023. Following the dissolution of Parliament for the purpose of conducting general elections last month, an oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to take place, which is anticipated to be attended by Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir, caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, as well as the chief ministers and governors of all four provinces.
Despite the chants and protests from the Opposition, Shehbaz emerged victorious on Sunday by securing a majority in the recently-elected Parliament. As the chosen candidate of both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Shehbaz was able to garner 201 votes out of the 336-member Parliament. His opponent, Omar Ayub Khan from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party led by imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan, only managed to secure 92 votes.
The victory of Shehbaz, who is known for his strong leadership and experience in governance, has been seen as a significant win for the PML-N and the PPP. Many believe that his election as the new leader of the Parliament will bring stability and progress to the country, especially in the face of ongoing political turmoil and economic challenges.
As Shehbaz prepares to take on the role of leading the Parliament, he has promised to work towards unity and cooperation among all political parties, in order to address the pressing issues facing Pakistan. With his track record of effective governance and commitment to serving the people, many are hopeful that Shehbaz will be able to bring about positive change and development for the country.
